Does it bother you when people start applause early in the American national anthem?
I mean, I get it, "land of the free" ends in a high note, and whatever diva is singing it usually gets to show off a bit. But the anthem goes on for another line. And when people applaud and cheer it sets off talking and settling down.
There's still another line left! Stand back up! Put your hand back on your heart!
Can someone please tell me that they feel the same way?
Sorry, I just got a little carried away. It only bothers me a little, but it's fun to rant every now and then, isn't it?
I do sing it all the way through, though, just so we can make a good impression for people from other countries.

- im guessing a lot of things make you mad. hate to be driving with you
- Personally, our national anthem was not meant as a performance piece. It was meant to be sung in unison by all present, similar to standing at attention and pledging one's allegiance to the United States of America.
So to hell with the diva or other performer. I sing out loud and proud caue I'll be damned if some diva is going to upstage my Patriotism!
- I think fans try to rush through it before a sports event. The adrenalin is flowing and everyone is thinking about the first play. Originally Cheering was not a part of it. It is more respectful to finish the song, hear out the high note, and when all the words have been sung, applause is OK. I don't approve of applauding the singer for her high note. If you want to appreciate her music, go to a concert instead. Have a great evening.
- I FEEL THE SAME WAY!!!!
Frankly, doing what these people do, I feel, shows a lack of respect for the Anthem and, by default, the USA.
Have a polite day.
- i feel the same way, let them finish singing
- Yes! And I also find it annoying when people rest their hand on there stomach/diaphram area. That's not where ur heart goes.
I also don't like the riffs, and all the extra carrying on pop stars tend to do. Knock it off and sing it right.
- I remember when major league baseball was permitted to continue playing after 9/11. Each game naturally started off with the National Anthem and I can tell you firsthand that I have never seen such a wild display of patriotism in my entire life! They could not finish a stanza without people standing up and cheering. It probably took 2-3 times as long to play the national anthem than normal. I caught 7 games that day (satellite), and the scenes were almost identical.
So my friend, I humbly do not believe it is out of disrespect for nation or to get on with the game, but that lingering unity post 9/11.
- I'm guessing your an angry person!!! Well in makes me abgry when people start claping in the Irish national anthem!
- I'm a musician, enjoy church, classical and patriot music; it bothers me not at all. Perhaps get a life.
- Yes it does. Wait until it's over. What also bothers me is when the singer (who usually can't sing) adds extra notes or holds notes out too long (especially at the end). Either sing it right or not at all.
- You're right but you'd have to go to the symphony to hear actual applause. That's about the only place you can go to find people with any class. Audiences at sporting events and on TV these days are so loud and obnoxious you no longer hear an audience just clapping. It's all drowned out by the accompanying hollering and screaming .
